This is my last day living in Salzburg... Just wanted to share with you all the wonder and beauty that can be found here in Austria (and Germany too!). A true inspiration for years to come!

Three Days in Graz

My husband took me to Graz, Austria this week as my birthday gift, and it is truly a lovely city, situated about four hours from Salzburg by train. The snap above is from the highest point and features forsythia in bloom and a charming cityscape below.

Graz is a very cool mix of old and new. For example - this glass room situated on the river.

This book store was my favorite. There was a life sized boat inside and a super cool ocean theme throughout the shop... I can only imagine how much kids would love visiting here.

There are countless churches throughout the city featuring chandeliers and ornate decor. My hubby is taking in the view from the back ;)

Travel Tip Tuesday: A Vegetarian in Salzburg

Veg Friendly Tempura and Salad at Didi Maier's Restaurant

It seemed pretty bad timing at first to give up eating meat right before our stay in Salzburg, but I must say, it's been quite easy to be a vegetarian here in Austria (a country with a reputation of being filled with only meat eaters and beer drinkers!) There's a little something for me at every restaurant and food store, and today I want to highlight two cafes that are worth a special mention; not only for their veg friendly food, but for their style too. 

The first is chef Didi Maier's restaurant, which can be found at Salzburg's Europark Mall. Didi's offers a lovely array of salads, fruit smoothies and lemonade drinks -  all great for vegetarians. On the first floor of the mall you can find Didi's companion location which is a beautiful bakery filled with desserts and breads. The food is not cheap - but is beautiful and worth it for a treat!

Sit at the 'bar' and get a great view of the kitchen during lunch!

Didi's has great branding ideas - like a German saying on each lemonade that is served.

 The second spot I'd like to mention is Leichtsinn, a lovely and bright cafe which is close to Salzburg's train station. Reservations are recommended here around lunchtime because of the limited amount of seating options.

Of course I'm obsessed with the logo at this place.

Leichtsinn offers beautifully prepared veggie dishes, a salad bar and lots of baked goods. Every detail of this place is truly thought out - that's what I enjoy the most!

Not your typical salad bar, everything here is marinated.

A pumpkin and potato strudel for lunch was delicious.

Save room for dessert because there are plenty to pick from.

Travel Tip Tuesday: Amazing Salzburg Krippe

If you happen to be in Salzburg, Austria during the holiday season and find yourself wandering around the ancient and notable street, 'Steingasse', don't forget to pay a visit to this annual miniature nativity display.

I happened across it with my husband the other day and was amazed by the charming aspect of this miniature world featuring hundreds of small dolls, miniature accessories and handmade storefronts. In the center of it all is a charming nativity scene (which unfortunately I wasn't able to get a picture of).

A lover of all things miniature my entire life, I was thrilled to happen upon this lovely display which apparently has been growing slowly behind the scenes at this gallery- which for the rest of year devotes itself to textile arts.

I love this lady's boots! And a special velvet coat tops off the look.

A hidden gem for sure, this special 'Krippe' is well worth the time to admire.

The Real 'Subjects' Behind Little Owl Lane

This week it was a real treat to find even more cute animals here in Salzburg. I thought nothing could top the hedgehog from last week, but I think this line of geese is pretty close.

Every time I draw, felt or mold a Little Owl Lane character I always use a photo as a reference. This time I'm lucky to have seen the actual subjects in person!

We visited the Salzburg Zoo and many outdoor areas in Austria, with my parents who were visiting us this month. We all loved these adorable swans, the proud rooster, and the 'skeptical sheep' below ;)

A Hedgehog Sighting!

A Hedgehog in Salzburg

I don't think I can properly convey how excited I was to see my first hedgehog this week. I have been joking with my hubby since we arrived in Austria that if I happened to see one.... it would make my time here complete. Well, this isn't the greatest pic, because they only come out at night (which I never knew), so it was hard to take a good image...

My mother-in-law woke us up out of a dead sleep at 3:45am to spot him in the garden, and I couldn't have been more happy. It was like Christmas morning!
