Watermelon Flower Pot Craft

Watermelon Flower Pot Craft with artist Lady Lucas | Linzer Lane Blog

I made these watermelon flower pots as examples for my art students this week, and enjoyed it so much - I wanted to blog about it! The best part about these adorable flower pots, is that you can design a whole set of them as different fruits a veggies (spotted mushroom, strawberry, lemon slice, etc.)

To make your own watermelon flower pots you will need;

- Terracotta Clay Pots (your choice of size)
- Acrylic Paints
- Paint Brushes

Start with clean, dry clay pot and grip it from the inside. Paint the larger part of the surface bright pink as shown. I added two coats - one after the other - to make sure the color was vibrant.

Next, paint the rim of the flower pot light green. Once dry, add some squiggly lines of dark green paint to mimic the rind of a watermelon.

Lastly, add some seeds using a small brush and black paint.

Use your painted flower pot as a display piece (perfect for art supplies!) or a lovely little plant.

How to Draw Sweet & Sour Cherries

How to Draw Sweet & Sour Cherries with Lady Lucas | Linzer Lane Blog #howtodraw #chibifood #kawaiifood

I took a poll this week online to get a pulse on what you'd like to see more of on the Linzer Lane Blog. A number of readers said more easy 'how to draw' tutorials, so I thought this easy step by step graphic might come in handy for those that would love to draw some cute cherries!

All you need to do is draw one step at a time - and don't forget the 'sweet' and 'sour' face at the end!

In addition, I can teach you how to draw four more cute fruits in my brand new video below:

If you watch it, you'll learn how to draw a lime, orange, peach and one smart apple ;)

Is there anything you'd love to learn how to draw? Leave a comment below and I'll consider if for my next video!

DIY Gourd Goose

A few weeks ago my parents and I attended a lovely 'Pumpkin Picking Party' at a friend's farm in Pennsylvania. We had the good fortune of selecting dozens of pumpkins - large and small - and this white gourd was one of them:

No doubt this long necked gourd totally looks like a little goose, so to make your own, simply tie a ribbon around the 'neck'. I love to make my own fabric ribbon with frayed edges. All you need is some cotton fabric material. Snip a tiny bit with sewing scissors and tear (as shown here:).

Add a little color to the beak, eyes and some rosy cheeks. I used some DecoArt paints for this and some black puff paint from A.C. Moore.

Display your goose where she can be seen by many! Halloween is coming fast ;)
Stay tuned for more cute ideas.

Why Keeping an Art Journal is for You

Why Keeping an Art Journal is for You | Little Owl Lane

I remember years and years ago when I started school at NYU, I had a notebook where I recorded every restaurant, museum, gallery and special spot I couldn't wait to see. Sometimes I taped receipts in there, ticket stubs, and the occasional business card.

Now as an adult that creates artwork for a living, I am constantly wanting to keep every magazine, article, tea container, match box and postcard. My piles of piles of little paper things had to come to end this month and I came up with the perfect idea!

Why Keeping an Art Journal is for You | Little Owl Lane

I purchased a notebook for one euro, a glue stick and little pair of scissors - and now I have a secret little spot to store all my ideas and inspiration. For about three dollars, you too can create a more organized outlet for your creativity as well as a calming hobby! ;)
